"Facing East" WIP

I had decided to put my Facing East quilt on hold until I could get a proper quilt wall in place. In the meantime my Swell quilt had sneaked jumped back into the WIP line while I was waiting for supplies to work on the wall. And as for the quilt wall you might ask, proper?... not quite. Functioning?...  yes (at least for now). So here is the current status of things:

Seeing the blocks up on a wall, I have a better feeling of which direction I need to go with my other blocks, espeically the color selections. I've got a lot of greens and pinks, which is to be expected, so working on new blocks limiting the use of those two colors is a little bit of a challenge. I'm limited somewhat by the range of Basic Grey grunge colors available... some blues and reds don't even come into question for me, as I am not the biggest fan of either. I obviously have to do a lot of re-arranging to get a good balance, but isn't that the beauty of a quilt wall?

Somehow, the first block that I made is still my favorite, and she is, of course, with pink and green. What about you, do you have favorite blocks when working on a quilt... it is usually the first, the last, etc.?

Linking up this week to WIP Wednesday.

  1. What a great quilt block! The colors are amazing! I'm working on a 6 pointed star quilt...'Y' seams...argh!

  2. Beautiful! My favorite always winds up being the second block. Odd, I know, but the first one always has mistakes, the second one comes out right, and then I get careless since I think I know what I'm doing!

  3. I love your blocks, but I have to ask, why would it be so horrible if you ended up with a predominantly pink and green quilt?

  4. This is fabulous! I'd love to know what the neutral textural fabrics you used for the 2 finished center circles are. I'm a big fan of textures and neutrals, so they really speak to me. As far as favorite block, it's almost always my first.

  5. Oh, Jayne, Y-seams... that's something that I've not yet attempted. I guess my paper piecing will have me tied up for a while, and then it might make it on the to-do list.

Allison... that's interesting that your favorite it the second block. Actually my runner-up favorite is my second block.

Sophie, generally speaking it's not too bad since I am naturally drawn to the color combo, but since I am using the Basic Grey grunge colors, I don't have as wide of a range of greens available to work with. What has happened is that I have a lot of greens that end up being beside each other that are very close in color or shade.

Andrea, the fabric circle on the left is using Katy Jones (Art Gallery) "You Are Here" and the fabric circle on the right is Tim Holz (Coats) "Symphony", and I love them both... literally fabric that you can eat by the bolt!

  7. Hi Gill, the Facing East pattern is from Carolyn Friedlander's book, Savor Each Stitch.

I have really enjoyed this book so far. There is a lot of hand sewing, as the name suggets. In addition, Carolyn does a lot of needle turn applique, but I have been able to find some alternative methods for this. Carolyn's style is simple and modern, but some of her fabric mixes and quilting techniques make her really unique.
