Life Happens

It doesn't always work out that everyday is a day at the sewing machine. Sometimes writing a sewing or crafting blog can be challenging because generally posts tend towards "look what I made this last week" or "look what I'm working on now", which can seldom give a real life glimpse into the everyday of a crafter. Explanations of "geee... life has been so busy that I didn't have time to sew this week" just doesn't cut it, and who wants to hear that post after post anyway? With that being said, let's just say that my crafting over the last few weeks has been that step back from the crafting room to enjoy the everyday... days of birthdays, new kindergarten days, not to mention the to-do lists that come with it all.

Amidst the business and whirlwinds of the past weeks, it was quite refreshing to carve out at least one evening of craftiness to work on what I like the call my "basket projects". It's that one evening out with my crafty circle of friends to catch up, chatter, and work on my already packed on-the go projects... you know, those projects that you don't intend to finish any time soon, but are the perfect take-it-with-you projects for the hands that just can't stay idle.

These little "orange peels" are the start of a table runner that I have planned using the raw edge applique Modern Beauty Block pattern from Pile 'O Fabric... did I mention that it's a free pattern? Unlike some other quilter's EPP is totally not my thing, but applique has my heart.

So, do you find it difficult to keep up with regular blog posts when the reality is that you are busy making real life happen, and escaping to the crafting room inevitably gets pushed to the bottom of the list?

Linking up this week to WIP Wednesday and Let's Bee Social.

  1. First off... I have to say.... Those paw print cupcakes are just the cutest! Yes, you do have to take some time just to live your life and it should always have first priority. Blogging is fun. And it can be a business. But real life is where it's at! Lovely orange peels. Looking forward to seeing those come together.

  2. Yes, there's a life beside sewing, quilting, blogging... Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad. I find that if we cannot work on a project when we want to, then, when we finally can, we savor the moment even more. If we could dedicate all our time to our favorite craft, maybe it would become boring?
Thank you for this interesting post. Have a good day!

  4. I've started to try and not beat myself up about missing a weekly blog by a couple of days. Hey, if we weren't busy doing 'stuff' then what would we write about?? At the end of the day, we sew, cook, travel etc first, and then write about it second, guilt shouldn't come into it! Like you, I have an orange peel project hidden away somewhere, and as for the EPPs... I try not to think about it! ;)

  6. Cute cupcakes - looks like a very fun and clever birthday party!
I try to post four times a week with specific content for scheduled link-ups. But sometimes life events, travel, health, family issues, etc. just have to take precedence. My blog is a hobby, so if it has to take a backseat to everything else, so be it. I do try to keep some life things private, so I don't mention a lot of non-quilty happenings on the blog.

  7. Cute little cupcakes ! Looks like a fantastic birthday party!

I quilt but generally post about that once per week; occasionally twice. I am more of a lifestyle blog so you are as likely to see gardening, grandkids or the neighborhood birds and squirrels on my blog. That way if I haven't sewn much it isn't noticed! :)

  9. Wow a post after my own heart!!! Yes, yes, YES. I have been out more than in the last 10 days and I haven't got any projects on the go set up - what a great idea. I used to have crochet to just pick up and go so thank you for reminding to get a bag packed and ready to take out the door with me. The party looks like it was going to be fun!!

Deine Orange Peels waren so verlockend... :-)

    Liebe Grüße,
    Karen

  13. Life does get in the way, I figure my blog makes me take time out to appreciate the good, and pretty in my life - so I share it. Do you really want to see pictures of me cleaning the house? I try to blog at least twice a week, and my posts have certainly dropped in number since I returned to part time work a year ago.

Looking forward to seeing your runner when it is finished.

  14. The whole birthday spread is AMAZING! It looks like it's straight from a movie or commercial ad...but BETTER! I don't even understand how peeps w/littles find the time do do anything. You are doing fantastic. I don't have littles at home so my "struggle" for lack of a better word at this moment, is always between sewing and blogging...and sewing usually wins. But for the most part I've been sticking w/once a week and once I start my very own linky party (Oct 1st) I plan to commit to 2 posts a week. I hope join my party. I'm visiting from Let's Bee Social. Stop by my blog for a visit anytime.

  15. Love all your pretty petal shapes. And yes I too find it hard to keep up with blog writing when "life" gets in the way of productive work. But not missing those life happenings are often far more important.

  16. Oh, I know that feeling too well! There are so many pies I have my hands in, and that not only crafting and sewing related. Life does get in the way of blogging, but I try to enjoy those moments too. Like birthday cakes, hmm, do yours look good!!
Love the petals by the way, I bet this will turn out great!
