Mein Hase

Even though there are million things swirling around on my to-do list with my second pattern launch about a month away, I decided to squeeze in a quick baby present. My oldest son's teacher just had a sweet baby girl, and I just couldn't get this adorable bunny out of my head as the perfect welcoming gift. I adore paper piecing, and this bunny from the mini woodland bundle was the first thing that came to mind, not to mention that Juliette's patterns are so well done.

I enlarged the pattern so that it was a better fit for a14" pillow, and used soft blush shades to leave know doubt that this is for a sweet princess. When I make a paper piecing block, I actually give a lot of thought to fabric placement. I thought that it would be fitting, and wanted to highlight the "life together" text print, since that's what adding a bundle of joy to the family actually means.

I finished it off with a envelope closure using Carolyn Friedlander's Grid Diamond print in Ice Peach Metallic from her Carkai collection.

As part of my yearly goal, I quilted this with FMQ swirls again... practice makes perfect, right? Free motion quilting on small projects like this are not the challenge for me, but quilting a larger quilt. Perhaps practicing on smaller projects like this will help me with the big ones (fingers crossed)

In Germany those enduring pet names that you might call your loved ones are quite different than what you would hear in the States. Instead of names like sweetheart, honey, sugar, etc. the names are usually animals like bunny (Hase), mouse (Maus), or sparrow (Spatz). So, it's fun for me to think that this pillow could possibly be "fĂĽr einen kleinen Hasen". (for a little bunny)

  1. What an adorable little bunny! And just the right size and format for being hugged and hugged. I think the head that rests on this pillow will only have the sweetest of dreams.

  4. What an adorable pillow, such a wonderful baby gift! I've found that if I approach FMQ a large quilt by just focusing on small areas (like the area in between my hands), it feels much more manageable.

  5. What a delightful gift for a newborn....! I love the bunny, the pink fabric with orange stars and the quilting too. The swirls are such a subtle and soft design. I also struggle with FMQ on large quilts. I think for me its getting the basting right!

  6. Lovely cushion, and the fabrics you chose are perfect. Funny, I remember my Mother calling me 'sparrow' when I was a child, often as 'sparrow in the treetops', but I think it is more a regional term in the UK.

  8. I love your little bunny, and I love that it could be a gift for a little bunny. My choice of nickname for little people tends to be "chicken" so I'm completely on board with animal pet names (get it - "pet" names! I crack myself up :-) ) Beautiful pillow and I'm sure will be very well loved.

  10. Lovely pillow. It turned out great - no wonder with that much thought you put into it (hello, fabric placement). The sweet girl will enjoy it!

I am more inclined to call small children "Monster" (monsters) or "Zwerge" (dwarfs). It must be strange to unknowing people because it is always meant in a loving way which the words themselves don't suggest. Words that stick to your mind because you grew up with them...

  13. You just know that I am a sucker for any quilted item with an animal on it. The quilting in a darker shade matches up well with the bunny and makes those swirls look rather elegant. I think I could very fall for someone who referred to me as Mein lieber Hase. How romantic!

  14. Hi Allison, this post made me smile. The pillow is just so lovely. This totally makes me want to try out FPP, which is probably not that big of a deal as I may think. Anyway. Have a great day! See you soon. Regina
