Churnstile Quilt Blocks

I have to admit that I've really enjoyed having a project in the works that is already cut and ready to go. For our Modern Patchwork Treffen in February, I ended up cutting almost all of the fabrics for my Churnstile quilt blocks... so when we met again in March, all I had to do was just sit down and sew! Ok, ok... so I think it's safe to say that this will not be my bee block, which is ok since it seems as if I've developed very specific ideas about the colors and fabrics

I thought that I needed to add a few blocks with softer tones to give this a little more balance... this shade of periwinkle is just perfect!

For a lack of a better word, I've also been making a few "cornerstone" blocks too. (I'm sure there's a quilting term for these smaller blocks) It's been fun work on a few placement ideas to see how they would look best when integrated in with the larger blocks... always open for feedback! (hint, hint)

Since this had officially been labeled another "basket project", you'll see little bits of progress here and there. I've got a pretty big basting project to start on!

  1. I love your blocks! I think either setting you've been playing with will look great, but to my eye, the first one has a slightly more traditional feel to it, the second one has a very slightly more modern feel to it. Probably because it looks more like columns than a grid.

  2. Hello! This is my first time commenting on your blog, but I couldn't resist it: this looks amazing! I love your fabric selection, and the idea of the "cornerstone" blocks really adds a lot to the bigger ones. I would go for the first option; in my taste, there is too much blank space in the second layout. But any way, this will look fantastic.

  6. Looks amazing, it's a great block but your colour and fabric choices are giving it that edge. The cornerstone blocks are perfect, all those tiny pieces!, and just with the 3 layouts you've shared here (the first without cornerstones and then two with) you've many options. I'm disappointed this will be a basket project as I'm eager to see your progression ;D Thanks so much for linking up at Sew Cute Tuesday today - Chris (guest host) @madebyChrissieD :D

  13. I love your blocks! I really love both of the layouts with the cornerstones (which I think is the proper name if you're using them at the corners of blocks between strips of sashing)and the colours you've chosen are gorgeous.

  15. HELLO!
I fell head over heels in love with your Alison Glass Sun Spots fabric block and have searched hours trying to find who had used these fabrics for the Churnstile block. I had to just let go and let it appear. Thank You for posting more on these blocks. **sigh** I am loving your fabrics and the little cornerstones are too cute. And I'm saving this page to my favorites! You have inspired me to make this quilt. I would love to see more as you continue to work on this gorgeous quilt.

  16. I love these blocks! The ones with the softer tone gives it a great balance. I would opt for the large blocks only though. Great to see the progress after seeing you working on these blocks at our sewing meeting!
