Pack Your Bags

My Patchwork Treffen group has a small little trip planned this fall to go to Denmark for a quilting weekend. As far as projects go, it really takes a lot of planning to have enough to do, even though at such get-togethers you never accomplish as much as you think you can. Seeing as how I can't take my sewing room with me, I really want to make sure that I carefully plan all my projects because there's no going to the favorite stack for a forgotten snippit.

As far as my my quarterly goals list goes, my bee quilt has not exactly taken top priority since I am working on my second and third patterns right now. But it is actually the perfect kind of project to put together when we are snuggled up in a cozy cabin, sewing machines humming, and chattering happily away.

I have to admit that at first I really struggled with this layout. With so many shades and tones, when I first laid this out randomly, it really wasn't coming together as I had envisioned. At some point I had the idea to cluster the diamond points according to color. Once I shifted blocks a bit, I knew it was my "that's it" moment.

Sometimes you just need a sew-without-thinking project, and I would say that this will be a perfect snuggle up on the couch, and pull the papers out after a long day of sewing... don't you think? But you'll have to wait until after the trip to see this one put together.

Any sewing retreat/quilting group stories to tell? Any unfortunate forgotten snippit tales?

Linking up this week to Let's Bee Social.

  1. No retreat tales to tell. I did want to say that I have seen this design (or something similar) numerous times and it never appealed to me. Your color choices and the light background really make this an entirely different (and gorgeous) project.

  2. This is another beauty! Sometimes you need to play with placement for a few days. But isn't it fun when it finally hits all the right notes?! Have a great time on your retreat! It sounds like a lovely fun time!

  3. Did you offer any instructions on what colors to put together in a block?? (or did you end up having to make some more blocks with certain colors in certain spots?) because they all 'neighbor' really well!! This is a stunner! Can't wait to see it sewn together.
Have fun beeing all cozy on the couch tearing out paper ;-)
Seriously - I hope you have a fabulous time with your sewing buddies and I am so happy for you that you get to do this.

  4. This looks like a perfect project to take on a retreat to work on. The colors grouped together look lovely. Thankfully there are usually enough other generous people on retreat that a forgotten snippet can be borrowed, in my experience. :)

  5. You're right, putting the colors together in the diamonds makes this layout really sing! It's going to be gorgeous when it's finished.

I've never been to a sewing retreat...it sounds like heaven :)

  12. When I look at it, I am again and again amazed at how different it is with scattered around and ordered colors. You really have a way with color placement.

  14. This is wonderful Allison! While I am not on "retreat", I did have to choose several projects carefully as we are on an extended trip away from all the "forgotton snippets"! Have a wonderful time with the fellow bees!!

  16. It looks great! I started this, but kept forgetting everything was backwards, and my colors got all messed up! So, if I ever finish, my layout really will be random!
